April 20th and 21st 2026 : exploring the history of the Bear Creek State Park area
Acacia Heritage Consulting of Austin, Texas, is a company that offers Archeological and historic resource surveys. They were hired by Texas Parks and Wildlife to conduct archaeological and historic surveys for the new state park situated between Leakey and Concan. Maximilian Hall contacted the museum and asked if they could conduct interviews of local individuals at our facility, and of course we said a great big YES!!
On April 20th and 21st, 2026, Max and Nick showed up along with two representatives of Texas Parks and Wildlife. They set up sound equipment and, over the two days, interviewed about 15 individuals exploring the history of the Bear Creek State Park area in different stages throughout time.
Not only did they gather a wealth of information about the area of the new park, but found a few pieces of side information as well. Nick Fuqua was looking at all the interesting things in the museum when he happened upon the Family Tree of the McLaurin Family. He yelled out, “I am descended from this guy!” As it turns out, he is of the same family as the Fuqua who perished at the Alamo. But not only that, but Cathy Voltaggio, a McLaurin descendant, is also part of the same Fuqua line. How fun was that! She was down to bring more items and historical data of the Christopher Stanford Family and to visit with her cousin, Linda Kirkpatrick.
It was a fun time for all of us, and Acacia and Texas Parks and Wildlife gathered a great amount of historical data. After completion of the interviews, LeeAnn took them all on a tour of the area.
