Archaeology, Show and Tell
May 31, 2025
The Real County Historical Museum and Texas Borderland Archaeology recently collaborated to present a program for attendees of the Rural Roundup, local residents, and even a couple from Ireland. This program provided the attendees the opportunity to learn about the rich history and archaeology of Real County by giving them a look into the early inhabitants and their culture.
The visitors were welcomed by the museum directors, who played a role in guiding and assisting everyone throughout the event.
The highlight of the program was the presentation by Texas Borderland Archaeology. A “show and tell” presentation focused on the early people of the county. The visitors were treated to live demonstrations of flint knapping with Izzy, the use of the atlatl, and the bow and arrow with Jackson. These techniques were important to hunting and the lifestyles of the early people. This interactive part of the program was very well-received.
Five display tables by Don, Dusty, Izzy, Jackson, and Linda exhibited local artifacts. Texas Borderland Archaeology connected all the artifacts to the past and gave a glimpse into the daily lives of the early inhabitants. Visitors were able to examine the artifacts and discuss their use, identity, and origins.
Another part of the visit was the opportunity to see the Lewis Ranch Rock, an ancient petroglyph that is housed within the museum. The visitors were intrigued by the petroglyph designs and the stories of the rock.
The museum directors and the TBA team were pleased to share their stories and knowledge with this enthusiastic audience.
